"Our customer had experienced a stroke, which had a profound effect on both his physical and mental health.
Upon speaking with him, it was clear that he was struggling to manage his finances and was extremely concerned about the loss of his Winter Fuel payment. His only source of income was his State Pension which he received £403.00 a month. Happy Energy supported the applicant to make a claim for Pension Guarantee Credit, knowing that if he was successful, then his Winter Fuel Payment would be reinstated. Furthermore, Happy Energy also supported him to make a claim for full exemption on his Council Tax.
The customer applications were successful and the added benefit gains totalled £2,900 per annum, based on £20 per week GPC, £30 pw CTB and a £300 pa winter fuel allowance.
The resident was thrilled by our level of support and the increased income. He lives alone and has no support services, so this intervention has made a huge difference."
Social Housing Resident - Case Study by our Small Grants Team
Mrs. E, a tenant with MTVH, was struggling with an energy debt of over £5000 whilst caring for her severely disabled adult daughter. Living on a fixed income from her State Pension and Attendance Allowance, Mrs. E was overwhelmed by the debt and how to manage it on her limited income.

Happy Energy completed Retrofit Assessment of the property which identified several energy-saving measures for her home. This included loft insulation, electric storage heaters, and solar panels, which we advised would hugely help reduce her energy costs. It was also discovered that a large freezer blocking a radiator was contributing to her high energy bills which was relocated as part of the energy efficiency works.

With permission, our team also contacted Mrs. E’s energy provider and uncovered errors in her billing after transitioning from a different provider. We assisted Mrs. E to lodge a complaint and push to waive the energy debt which was successfully agreed.

Additionally, Happy Energy supported Mrs. E and her family by exploring further sources of financial aid through our small grants advice and resources team.

Thanks to these efforts, Mrs. E now has lower cost energy bills and a warmer home where she can focus on her daughter’s care without the burden of an overwhelming debt.
